The City of Ukiah is working to preserve and protect the watershed that feeds the aquifer that is our source of water. The primary target of preservation is the Western Hills which also have great value to the community as a viewshed. Many communities, including San Francisco, Marin, and Willits, have purchased, and preserved their watersheds. Some communities open these preserves to public recreation and the placement of utility supporting infrastructure, such as water supply tanks and communication towers.
The City has acquired over 700 acres of the Western Hills with plans to incorporate the area and designate it as open space. Although these efforts have not completely eliminated development, the effort has restricted development to the lowest slopes closest to existing housing. City staff are pursuing grant funds to increase the City’s holdings.
In the Spring of 2023, a Baseline Assessment Report was completed. The report is now being used to help inform a Management Plan for the WHWPA. An initial draft has been completed and is now available for public comment.
