North State Street Improvement Project
The City of Ukiah is preparing a grant application to improve the last remaining section of the four-lane former Highway 101 between Norton Avenue and Low Gap Road.
Identified problems in this area include:
- Speeding vehicles
- Unsafe lane changes and increased risk of accidents when cars are stopped in the travel lane to make a left turn
- Unsafe pedestrian crossings
- Damaged and incomplete sidewalks
- Missing curb ramps (at corners)
- Uneven street surface (from concrete panels)
- Aging underground infrastructure (water, sewer, storm drains)
- Lack of shade cover
- Lack of bicycle lanes
This project seeks to address those problems, creating a safer corridor for the community.
Funding for this project, if awarded, would come from the CalTrans Advanced Transportation Program.
On Tuesday, May 26th, the City of Ukiah hosted a virtual workshop to describe the project area and gather community input. The video can be found here: May 26, 2026 Workshop
