Drive Clean with Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

California is leading the charge toward a cleaner, more sustainable future—and you can be part of it. Electric and hybrid vehicles offer cleaner transportation, lower fuel costs, and sizable incentives. Learn how making the switch can benefit your wallet, your lifestyle, and the environment.

Today’s electric vehicles typically come in two forms – all-electric vehicles (EV), that run 100% on electricity and plugin hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), that run on electricity but also have a gas-powered engine that can be used for extended trips. EVs have tremendous torque and acceleration. They typically have a very responsive feel and are fun to drive!

It All Adds Up

All those daily trips to work, school, appointments, and the store add up.

Drive More, Spend Less

Electric and hybrid vehicles are more affordable than you might think. With state and federal incentives, you can significantly reduce your upfront costs—and save even more over time.

Available Incentives:

Fuel and Maintenance Savings:
  • Electricity is typically cheaper than gas—especially when you charge at home overnight
  • EVs have fewer moving parts than gas-powered vehicles, meaning lower maintenance costs and fewer trips to the mechanic

Power Up at Home or On the Go

Charging an electric vehicle is easier than ever. Convenient home options are available as well as several local public options when you’re out and about (see map below).

At-Home Charging:
  • Plug into a standard outlet (Level 1) or install a faster 240V charger (Level 2)
  • Charge overnight and start each day with a full battery—no gas station stops needed

Public Charging Network:
  • California has over 80,000 public charging ports—and growing
  • Find chargers using apps like PlugShare, ChargePoint, or through your vehicle’s navigation system
  • Fast chargers (DC Fast Charging) can get you back on the road in 30 minutes or less

Workplace and Community Charging:
  • Many employers, shopping centers, and public facilities now offer EV charging stations
  • Some utility providers offer discounts for charging during off-peak hours

Cleaner Air Starts with You

Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in California. All-electric EVs have no tailpipe! By choosing an electric or hybrid vehicle, you help reduce air pollution, protect public health, and fight climate change. The fuel sources that are used to generate Ukiah’s electricity are significantly cleaner than gasoline, so you’re helping reduce pollution in our community when you switch to an EV.

Why EVs and HEVs Make a Difference:
  • Zero tailpipe emissions from battery electric vehicles
  • Significantly reduced emissions from plug-in and standard hybrids
  • Cleaner energy mix: California continues to add more renewable energy to the grid each year
  • Every electric mile driven helps reduce harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides and particulate matter—especially important for communities affected by poor air quality

Be Part of a Cleaner Future:
Driving electric is one of the most impactful choices you can make to protect California’s natural beauty and build a more sustainable future for all.
